The Fleet Manager is responsible for overseeing all maintenance and repair of departmental vehicles and related equipment. The Fleet Manager is a civilian working under the supervision of the Sergeant who serves as the Administrative Assistant to the Chief. He maintains the entire fleet of vehicles for the department working closely with various vendors and service providers through the completion of work. Some of the specific duties of the Fleet Manager are removing hazardous materials (such as blood and other body wastes) from vehicles, completing insurance claims and getting estimates for vehicles damaged in accidents, staying current on vehicle recalls and warranties, coordinating the purchase process of new vehicles and equipment. He takes care of licensing and registration of each vehicle.
Currently our fleet consists of 291 vehicles, including 191 marked vehicles, 100 unmarked vehicles, 5 off-road ATVs, 1 command vehicle, 1 bomb truck, 1 SWAT truck, and 4 Motorcycles.
The Fleet Manager is responsible for evaluating and obtaining estimates of equipment along with figuring the cost effectiveness of such equipment. He maintains the record keeping for each vehicle utilizing new computer software to track every cost. He also must track his annual repair costs and assure that he stays within budget even though our fleet has increased and more service is required as the vehicles age.
