The Personnel Unit is responsible for the maintenance of personnel records of members of the department. This unit is liaison between the police department and the Police Merit Commission and conducts the annual applicant and biannual promotional processes in a joint effort with the commission. The Personnel Unit is staffed by one sergeant and one Civilian Personnel Specialist and is responsible for monitoring the progress of officers during their probationary period and maintains liaison with other units within the department for this purpose. The Personnel Unit also maintains liaison with the Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. This unit is responsible for coordinating physical fitness assessments and refers department personnel to sources of information for general health and fitness issues. This unit is responsible for the recruiting efforts of the department and works closely with the Chief of Police, the Police Merit Commission, and the Minority Recruitment Committee in this effort.

When is the application deadline?

The current deadline is February 29th, 2024.

When and how many officers are the Evansville Police Department hiring?

The number is determined by the number of resignations and retirements.

Do I need a college degree or credit to be hired?

No, only a high school diploma is required. If you have not graduated from high school, but have a GED, then 30 semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university or 2 years of military service is required.

What are the physical fitness requirements?

You must pass a physical assessment which includes executing a 16” vertical jump, 29 sit-ups, 25 pushups, 300 yard sprint in 71 seconds or less, and 1.5 mile run in 16.28 minutes or less.

Will I be paid while I’m in the police academy?

Yes, you start getting paid the day you are hired.

What is the starting salary for an Evansville Police Officer?

In 2023 the starting salary is $57,110.

What are the residency requirements if I’m hired?

There are no restrictions regarding residency at the time of application; however, you must have a residence in Vanderburgh, Posey, Gibson or Warrick County on the hire date.

What schedules do officers work?

Officers will be scheduled on one of the three shifts.

Does the Evansville Police Department offer an internship program?

Yes. Due to the popularity of the program, we only schedule during the senior year of college.

What are the age requirements?

You must be 21 by the date your application is submitted to our pension fund before the swear in date. You must be hired before your 39th birthday.

What is the process schedule?
